TREATMENT

FOR

CHILREN

The American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) recommends every child to get an initial orthodontic consultation no later than at age 7. Although orthodontic treatment is not needed for everyone at this age, occasionally the situation requires an early intervention.

Some of the main factors that make the orthodontic treatment necessary at early age are as follows:

   ▪ Growth Modification

Children go through an active growth period, and depending on the skeletal relationship,

controlling or modifying the growth may be necessary. An adequate growth control can

sometimes prevent the need of surgery at a later stage.

   ▪ Eruption control

This is the time when the adult teeth start coming out, and maintaining the proper space

or creating space that is needed for the adult teeth is often necessary. This can prevent

the need of tooth extraction at a later age.

   ▪ Prevention of trauma

The position of the tooth can sometimes cause damages to the lip or the teeth.

Unhealthy position of the teeth is one of the leading cause of the tooth injury especially

when the child accidentally falls down.

   ▪ Psychosocial benefits

At an early age, children can go through tremendous psychological changes.

It is also the time that the children become conscious about their appearances. Straight teeth

and a nice smile is as important to a child as to the adults for the development of their identity

  and build social relationships.

Even if the patient does not need orthodontic treatment immediately, monitoring the child's growth and development is usually necessary.
