  In order to be an orthodontic specialist, a doctor who completed the dental degree (DDS or DMD) needs to go through a rigorous 2-3 years of training in a specialty program that is accredited by 

the American Dental Association.
However, each orthodontist will have a different level of knowledge or standards in their treatment they provide.
The American Board of Orthodontics serves as an organization that evaluates and verifies the 
quality of the orthodontic treatment for multiple cases that the individual orthodontist has treated.
According to ABO, only one-third of all the orthodontists that have graduated from an accreditted orthodontic program, are board certified as of 2015.
  In order to help the public's decision in choosing the orthodontist, ABO provides a searching 

service for an orthodontist in the neighborhood.
